Erin from Project Energize came to talk to us this week about healthy food in lunchboxes. We found out that fruit, veges, meat, cheese and sandwiches are the best foods to put in lunchboxes as they give us all the energy we need for a busy day of learning at school.
We also discovered that chippies, noodles, chocolate muesli bars and fruit strings are foods that slow us down and don't give us good energy.
We are a class of New Entrant learners at Hamilton East School, New Zealand. We learn through play, art, singing and stories. We invite you to leave comments on our blog. Kia Ora.

Making Gnocchi
Some Room 5 children helped their big buddies in Room 10 make gnocchi this week. Gnocchi is a type of pasta made from potato.
Room 10 then came to visit us and brought the gnocchi with them to share with us.
Yum, yum!! We love gnocchi!

The Enormous Watermelon!
As part of Harvest Week we have been reading 2 lovely stories about watermelon - The Enormous Watermelon, and Kimi and the Watermelon.
Our poem this week was also about watermelon:

Oh so cool!
On Friday we went on a watermelon hunt to the Kitchen Garden. Who could find the enormous watermelon growing there?
We found it! It was round and green and smooth, just like the watermelon Kimi grew in the story Kimi and the Watermelon. We carefully carried it back to the classroom where we cut it up and ate it. It was soooo delicious!!
We then published our watermelon poem in our home books. Did you see the drawings?
What fantastic fun learning we have had this week!
Harvest Week
This week was Harvest Week. The idea is that we harvest food from our Kitchen Garden to make a shared kai with. We began by visiting the garden to see what we could find growing there. We talked about the seed, plant, fruit growing cycle, and what veges and fruit trees need to grow and produce food to eat.
Shared Writing
We have been doing Shared Writing in Room 5. This is where we write a story together about an experience we have all had. This writing is on display in our room.
The first story we wrote was about a dead rat. Dugan our caretaker found a dead rat in the flax bush by the office. He came and showed the children the rat. They were fascinated with the rat asking all different sorts of questions about why it died, and looking at its teeth and feet.
We then wrote about swimming, as all the children had loved swimming time.

Dugan showed us a dead rat.
The rat was wet.
The rat had little ears and
little feet
and claws.
The rat had a long tail.
It was a boy rat.

Art Outside
Every Monday afternoon we meet with our buddy class, Room 10. We call this tuakana-teina time.
This is a Maori term meaning elder-younger children learning together.
We were experimenting with natural resources found outside, to create art.
Room 5 children really enjoyed creating with their older buddies.
